Commander's Corner

 Commander’s Corner

Welcome to the Wesley Chapel Cadet Squadron whose inaugural meeting was October 21, 2009 with the actual charter date being November 9, 2009. The squadron was started by Steve and Joyce Lampasona with 6 senior members and 4 cadets. The squadron has grown significantly over the years and as of June 2016 the squadron has 15 senior members and 40 cadets on the roster.

I began my four year term as squadron commander in March 2015 and it has been an exciting journey (I have been a CAP member since 1997). In my first year, the squadron had been recognized in many ways for the outstanding dedication to the three missions of CAP: cadet programs, aerospace education and emergency services. In 2015, I was honored to be awarded The Exceptional Service Award in November 2015, Squadron Commander of the Year for 2015 as well receiving a Wing Commander’s Commendation. As you can see, I am all in and fully dedicated to the CAP program and cadets!

In September 2013, thanks to the valiant efforts of Maj. Joyce Lampasona, the squadron was awarded, by National Headquarters, with the Quality Cadet Unit Award and we have been the proud recipients of this award in 2014, 2015 and 2016 as well. In addition, in September 2013, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Capt. Todd Curabba, the squadron was awarded the Aerospace Excellence Award and we have been the proud recipients of this award in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

In 2013, the squadron, thanks again to Maj. Joyce Lampasona and her team, was awarded as the Florida Wing Squadron of Merit (Squadron of the Year) and I’m proud to carry on the tradition as we were awarded it again in 2015. This award recognizes the top cadet or composite squadron in all of Florida Wing. In addition to this very prestigious award, the squadron was awarded the Squadron of Distinction for Southeast Region in 2015. This award recognizes the top cadet or composite squadron at the regional and national levels.

Not only was the squadron as a whole recognized for their achievements but, individual senior members have been recognized as well for their contributions. Capt. Todd Curabba was awarded the 2015 Frank G. Brewer CAP Memorial Aerospace Award. This award recognizes the individual for their outstanding contributions to the advancement of youth in aerospace activities.  Along with this award, he also received a Wing Commander’s Commendation. In addition, Capt. Rhonda Curabba was awarded as the 2014 DDR Officer of the Year and received a Wing Commander’s Commendation in 2015. We have a lot of new senior members that have recently joined the squadron and I can’t wait to see what awards they receive in the future.

To all in the Wesley Chapel Community (and surrounding areas), we invite youth from 12 to 18 years old and their parents to visit the squadron and see if this program is right for you. The Civil Air Patrol program offers leadership, emergency services and aerospace education activities that will benefit anyone no matter what they chose as their career path. CAP teaches military discipline, customs and courtesies, respect and integrity as well as embracing physical fitness. We are the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and we were recently brought into the fold of Total Force in 2015.

Come and visit the squadron and let us tell you all about CAP!
